Courier Journal: What does it mean to have reached 15 years with your own publishing company? The following answers have been edited for length and clarity. The Courier Journal sat down with Royston to talk about her career as a publisher as it celebrates 15 years in business. "My dad always taught us that the gifted will never be broke a day in your life, as long as you have a gift, and an amount you can charge for that gift … you should never be broke a day in your life," Royston said. One is focused on children's books, faith books, and family-friendly content, while the focuses on more mature subjects, including Sci-Fi and mystery. Royston, an author turned publisher, runs two distinct publishing companies. A woman on a mission to incorporate more representation and diversity through her writing into the publishing world, Royston sees her role as a "gift." Today, Royston is celebrating 15 years in the publishing industry, where she is one of the roughly 5% of Black publishers nationwide, according to a study done by Lee & Low Books, an independent publishing company. Her career as an author launched, but she soon realized she had the skills, and desire, to start her own publishing company, which she had turned into a more than decade-long career. As she moved forward with her life, she kept dragging around the boxes of her writings. In 2007, Royston decided to turn her journals into a book of poetry and got published. While balancing her divorce and school workload, she wrote, and wrote, and wrote, filling a seemingly endless number of spiral notebooks. Calculate the word count using the estimating method outlined on page 2 (and round up to the nearest thousand) rather than using the actual word count calculated by the program.Ĭenter your novel's title about halfway down the page, add two single-spaced returns, and then your name (or pseudonym) as you want it to appear when your book is published."Writing really was very therapeutic," Royston told the Courier Journal. Type your name, address, phone number, and email address in the upper left corner in single-spaced, 12-point Courier. When you send your manuscript to agents and editors, you'll want to include a title page to let people know how to contact you and where to send the checks. Page headers typically include your last name, followed by your novel title (which you can shorten if you have a long title), and end with the page number.Ĭhapters begin on a new page about a third of the way down and start with a centered chapter title, usually in all caps (i.e., all of the letters are capitalized). Don't use a blank line to separate your sections since it is easily missed by the typesetter. ![]() Section breaks (the visual breaks between the scenes in your story) are indicated using a centered number sign (#). By the way, the first page of a chapter is estimated to have 250 words, and partial pages other than the first page are estimated to have 125 words. Four hundred pages is about a hundred thousand words. A 25 line page, then, will have an average of 250 words-a nice big round number. The math works like this: Sixty characters per line at an average of six characters per word (a publishing industry rule of thumb) works out to an average of ten words per line. Why is that? So that your editor can estimate the word count and the final page count of your book. The margins are set so that there are 25 lines per page, with each line having a maximum of 60 characters. The first line of a paragraph is indented one half inch, or 5 characters, from the margin. In the standard format, section text is double-spaced, left-aligned, and set in 12-point Courier font. ![]()
